The study of Latin at Great Neck North Middle School is comprised of a three year sequence. Students begin in the sixth grade in a full year course and continue through the end of the eighth grade. One unit of high school credit is achieved by the end of the 8th grade. While the primary goal is to learn Latin vocabulary and grammar, time is also devoted to enriching students' English vocabulary through study of word derivation. Another important aspect of the curriculum is an overview of Greco-Roman culture. Topics of study include mythology, politics, history, art and architecture, engineering, daily life and customs among others. At the eighth grade level students also compete in the National Latin Exam and have the opportunity to position themselves for a scholarship at the post-secondary level.
